Day 2- Day 14 December 2007

December 31st - The door closed for the initial doctor to come in for the second opinion but within an hour, God provided a different doctor to give an evaluation. His findings were relatively similar to James attending physicians. James remains stable and is showing some signs of clinical improvement. The doctors are not scheduling a surgery for amputation at this time. James will not be receiving dialysis tomorrow to see how his kidneys react. Please continue to pray for his leg and kidneys. Also please pray for Cathy and the many decisions she has to make concerning James care.

December 31st - James had a difficult night due to the decrease in sedation medication which makes him more aware of the breathing tube. The natural instinct is to cough or bite down on the tube so the doctors have again decided to keep him heavily sedated. They are still waiting to hear when the second opinion doctor will be in.

December 30th - James did not have his surgery today. God is SO good. (no matter what!). We have seen little glimpses of our great God at work during this whole trial, knowing full well He is doing so much more than what we see. James has had a good day overall. His vital signs are strong without the support of medicine and he didn't have any fever until only slightly as we were leaving this evening. His lab values are showing improvements and decreasing signs of sepsis. The doctors are encouraged and are postponing surgery at this time. Dialysis will be continued daily. They have stopped his sedation medicine but he will continue on very strong pain medicines which keep him comfortable and mostly asleep. He did respond appropriatly to Cathy a few times today which was very encouraging to her. God has provided a doctor to come in for a second opinion possibly tomorrow or when needed. This doctor is a well renown cardio vascular surgeon who "happens" to be on staff at Northridge Hospital. (imagine that!) James is still critical and may still have to have this surgery so please continue to pray for James, for Cathy and family and for the doctors and nurses. Also please pray that opportunities would be taken to share our amazing God. Cathy has felt the power of prayer and gives her heartfelt thanks.

December 30th - James will be going into surgery at 10:30 a.m. This surgery is being considered life saving. It will help to alleviate the toxins that are affecting the kidneys and contributing to the sepsis. His condition is stable but critical as well.
The doctors have exhausted all of their sources and the only solution is amputation. The doctors have given permission to have a physician outside of their network to give a second opinion. If you know of anyone who would be available please contact Diane Manzo at 661.714.3227 as time is running out. The person would would have to be an ortho, general or vascular surgeon.
Cathy is confident that God is in control and is opening and closing doors. She is trusting in him for the outcome.
Please continue to pray for James!

December 29th - The Doctors are saying the procedure to amputate his leg is urgently needed at this time to protect James' life. Cathy is hoping a second opinion will be made available, but she will of course, give consent when they are ready to start. James is very weak and the surgery will be hard on his body. He has a high fever. Please pray for James' strength and that if they go ahead with the amputation that this will be the solution.
Currently Andrew Daymude and Jenny Young are with Cathy Daniels. Please continue to pray!!!

December 28th - The surgeons came out during todays surgery and they told Cathy that they do not see the leg tissue being viable or alive. They are suggesting to amputate his leg but have given her the opportunity for a second opinion. Sunday is the latest they can wait. Cathy is going to get a second opinion as an opportunity to allow God to do a miracle or a confirmation to proceed forward. Please pray for wisdom for this new doctor who is hand picked by God. This is still a very critical stage in James recovery.

December 28th - James is having surgery at 11 a.m. to remove any dead muscle tissue in his leg. He also has had a bit of a fever. Please continue to pray that God continues to heal his body.

December 26th - James condition has remained basically unchanged for today. His leg wounds are draining properly. The doctors will be evaluating his leg tissue on Friday with the possibility of surgery at that time if needed. Continue to pray that his leg wounds would heal quickly, that his kidneys would begin functioning normally, and for his emotional/spiritual health (as he comes to, as the sedation decreases). Cathy has been encouraged by the many e-mails and phone calls she has received. Unfortunately, she is unable to respond to such a great show of love but please continue to e-mail encouraging words. Please direct all phone calls to Diane Manzo at 661.714.3227.

December 25th - James is doing well after surgery and the doctors are still cautiously optimistic. He is still on a ventilator at this time. Please keep praying for his leg and that more of the muscle tissue does not die off. Also continue to pray that his kidneys wake up and start to function on their own.

December 24th - James came out of surgery around 7:55 p.m. and everything went well. They removed some muscle tissue that was dying. When they scraped some of the muscle off there was healthy muscle underneath which has a fresh blood flow. They took some muscle off of his thigh as well as some on his calf. He is doing well. They will hope to start weening him off of the ventilator tomorrow. He will also continue to be on dialysis. Please continue to pray for James and that his body continues to be healed.

December 24th - Please pray for James as he will be going into surgery today around 4:00 p.m. to remove 2 areas of dead muscle in his leg.
