Day 46 - Day 74 February 2008

February 29th - James required dialysis again today and may require it all weekend. Excess fluids were removed as much as possible through dialysis. He also needed two units of blood and two units of blood products. One doctor described his need for additional blood due to a decrease in blood production and also from the drainage from his wounds. The doctors are still very concerned about the health of his kidneys as well as the many other systems of concern. Blood pressure and temperature were adequately maintained with medication. James did seem to be resting quietly for most of the day. Thank you for your continued prayers.

February 28th - A fairly quiet day it was. James had dialysis and was given two units of blood and two units of blood products. They also removed approximately two liters of excess fluids. Fever often follows surgery as it did for him today. Morphine was increased for his elevated heart rate which could be an indication of pain but he was not showing visually signs such as wincing or grimacing. Keep praying for James and trust in the almighty God.

February 27th - We are thanking God that He has allowed James to survive another surgery. The surgery went very well today. They removed the rest of the femur bone from the socket joint and the wound size was decreased due to the revision. His vitals remained stable during surgery but he did require six units of blood. The doctors are encouraged to see that the kidneys are functioning at an improved level (still not normal but better) and that the pelvic area CT scan has not worsened. All in all, very good news. James continues to be very critical; there is still much healing needed and other hurdles to overcome. Please continue to pray in faith with much thanksgiving for all He has done and continues to do.

February 26th - The CT scan of the abdomen was unchanged from the previous. He had dialysis today and was given 3 units of blood as well as three liters of fluids were removed (James is very edematous - fluid retention). The leg revision surgery is scheduled for 2:30 tomorrow. There are risks involved but the anticipated benefits outweight the risk. I can't urge you enough to continue on in prayer (and fasting) and make our requests to God. "We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. May Your unfailing love rest upon us, oh Lord, even as we put our hope in You." Psalm 33:20-22

February 25th - The results are not in for the pelvic area CT scan that was performed today. It was a very busy day with the scan, a picc line change and his very elaborate dressing changes. The wound specialist nurse as well as the orthopedic surgeon were present. Some of the wounds are healing but the leg wound needs to be revised again. The surgery is scheduled for Wednesday at 2:30. This will be a very difficult surgery with him being unstable and the possibility of blood loss during surgery, but the area needs to be removed. This has been such a long battle not only for James and Cathy but also for the doctors and nurses. Please pray for their strength and perseverance during this time along with our requests for James to our great God.

February 24th - James condition remains the same today. Please continue to pray for James best, for strength for Cathy and the family, wisdom for his doctors and compassion and guidance for his caregivers.

February 23rd - James had dialysis today and received blood. His condition is unchanged and critical. It is our privilege to continually bring him before our loving Father. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

February 22nd - An infection has been found in one of James previous surgery areas and a different antibiotic is being given. Otherwise his conditions remains the same. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

February 21st - Another day with little changes. The doctors have found James has a sinus infection and have added a new antibiotic. He is still so sick. Don't grow weary in praying. We know God is presently at work in this; now and/or later. "However, as it is written: 'No eye has seen, nor ear has heard no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love HIm'" 1 Corinthians 2:9

February 20th - Today was uneventful for changes in James condition. Medications have been adjusted higher and lower according to the need of the day (fever, blood pressure and pain medications). Please continue to pray and trust. "You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light" Psalms 18:28

February 19th - James fever continues to be controlled by Tylenol and a higher dose of medications was required to maintain adequate blood pressure. James had a short period where he seemed to be out of sedation (maybe 5-10 minutes). He looked sad and distressed but what calmed him was beautiful - the name of Jesus and a reminder that He never leaves us. "The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10

February 18th - James had dialysis today with excess fluids removed and two units of blood given. His temperature remains normal but an increase in medicine was required to maintain adequate blood pressure. All other areas of concern remain the same. Today was the blood drive in honor of James. Thank you all who came to give blood. There was such an overwhelming response that even some were turned away and will have to give at another location and time. Sixty-two units of blood were donated. James is truly loved. The show of love is so amazing to see; your love and Gods love toward us.

February 17th - James preliminary test results for the abdominal fluid came back negative. They have a five day growth period for the final results. He had minimal fever and blood pressure within normal limits with the support of medication. Thankfully no new problems but still critically sick. We wait in the faithfully loving and capable hands of our Lord.

February 16th - There was little change in James condition today. The paracentesis (surgical tapping of a fluid-filled body cavity to withdraw fluid) of the abdomen was done successfully and the fluid will be tested for infection. This accumulation of fluid often happens with the very sick in prolonged care but we are praying that it has not become infected. Please continue thanking God for his goodness and love.

February 15th - James didn't have a fever today and his blood pressure was maintained with medication. He also did not have dialysis but Lasix (a diuretic) was given in hopes of removing some excess fluids. The CT results revealed fluid in the abdominal area. They will be inserting a tube in hopes of removing the fluid and testing it to see if there is infection at this site. Infection is the enemy. For the pelvic area, it has not changed much. The drain is in the correct position however there is little drainage. Wound dressings were changed today and while the doctors were pleased to see some healing in those areas, James remains VERY sick. He is critical and these are critical days. Please continue to pray as God works in James and in all the circumstances surrounding him.

February 14th - James temperature and blood pressure were within normal limits even with a decrease in his medication. His morphine was increased but still James responded intermittently with eyes open sometimes accompanied with a smirk but also at times with a grimace. He had another CT of the pelvic area but we have not received the report. Please continue to pray.
"Trust in Him at all times, O people. Pour out your hearts to Him; for God is our refuge." Psalms 62:8

February 13th - We were disappointed to see a higher fever today (101.8). Ice packs along with Tylenol were used to reduce this but only to 101. A higher dose of blood pressure medicine was given to treat James struggling pressure and it remained within normal limits at the end of the day (with continued meds). Dialysis was not needed nor was blood given. There did appear to be an increase in drainage from his wounds possibly agitated from todays dressing change. Also one of his antibiotics was changed in hopes of a better response to the infections. Keep praying. What comfort we have knowing the almighty hand of God is in control. Praise His Name!

February 12th - James remained with a low fever today. He had dialysis including receiving some blood and blood products and also removing (as they often do) two liters of fluid from his body (when your so sick your body retains excess fluid around the cells). Morphine and Ativan (sedation medicine) doses were also increased to keep him comfortable. Unfortunately, his blood pressure was unstable so his medication has been doubled. So we wait; trusting our Mighty God and comforter. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." Psalms 46:1-3

February 11th - James remained about the same today. His blood pressure is being supported by medication, his fever is on the low side, and he had dialysis today. It is disappointing that he has not demonstrated any improvement in his infections, but we must continue to pray that the antibiotics he has been on will begin to heal his body. Please also pray for wisdom for all his caregivers.

February 10th - James blood culture did come back positive, confirming sepsis at this time. The tests also showed staphylococci (staph). The antibiotics he is presently on should cover these infections. His vitals (supported by medication) have not changed much since yesterday. James appeared to respond to some conversations around him. Keep praying. God is our hope and we will trust in Him.

February 9th - James blood pressure was maintained within normal limits with medication and has had minimal fever all day. Increased morphine and sedation medicine kept him looking comfortable and he did not need dialysis. Continue bringing requests before our gracious God; willing to yield with thanksgiving to His perfect plan. Reminder: We have added new appointment slots for the blood drive in James honor. Please make an appointment by clicking the "Blood Drive Sign Up" picture above, if you are planning on donating blood. Thank you so much!

February 8th - Today we had our meeting with six of James primary doctors, his wound nurse, attending nurse, case worker and social worker. There was much discussion about James condition and what can be done next. The consensus is that the infection in the pelvic area is inoperable at this time with James instability and varying wounds. His antibiotics and blood pressure medicines will be continued with hopes of improvement. Although his blood culture came back negative, he continues to show signs and symptoms of sepsis. Continue to pray FERVENTLY for James, for Cathy and all the family. Give praise to our Almighty, Sovereign and Loving God and pray with thanksgiving for the great love He has for us all and for the perfect plan He has in mind.

February 7th - The meeting is tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. to discuss James care. Please keep this time in prayer. The infectious disease doctor confirmed the infection in the pelvic area. They do not know to what degree as to total area affected. They are also not sure if this area is operable. This will be discussed tomorrow. A plastic surgeon came in today to give his opinion on possible surgeries in the future. At this time he is not a candidate for these surgeries with James being septic and unstable. But, God is Faithful no matter what! Isaiah 25:1 O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things you planned long ago.

February 6th - James has been receiving Tylenol today to keep his fever low and reduce stress on his body. He had two CT scans of the pelvic cavity today; with and without dye. They were able to see the area in question and drain off 10cc of fluid and put in a tube in hopes of draining more. The intent is that without the excess fluid that the antibiotics will be able to work more efficiently. The blood culture results are not in but the doctors are saying he's showing signs and symptoms of sepsis. Although James has had this before, the doctors are VERY concerned. A meeting is being scheduled for Friday with James doctors to discuss his care. In this, please pray for wisdom and continue to rest in His care.

February 5th - James continued to have fever today and his blood pressure was low but responded well with support of medication and fluids. He did have dialysis with hopes of removing excess fluid (around the cells) throughout his body. ACT scan of the pelvic area is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.. With those results, the doctors will decide about the possibility of draining a fluid pocket in that area. We are waiting on a blood culture to see if James is septic again. These symptoms as well as some others are pointing in that direction. Please keep praying and trust our God who knows best.

February 4th - Because of the degree of James wounds, he has a nurse who is a wound specialist who comes in to attend his wounds and change the dressing and vacuums. The surgeon is often present to assist and evaluate. James had those dressings changed today. The doctor (as well as his specialty nurse) was happy to see an improvement (even a little improvement). Blood was given this morning and his blood pressure was strong this afternoon and evening. He did have dialysis today but it was only marginally needed. Unfortunately, he had a fever of 102. His pain medication as well as sedation medication was slightly decreased which allowed Cathy some brief moments with James. It appeared James was somewhat aware but also sad. This is a time to not only pray for physical healing but also for his emotional and spiritual strength and fortitude.

February 3rd - James received one unit of blood along with some blood products today. His blood pressure had been low but returned within normal range after receiving the blood. Again James did not require dialysis. The doctors continue to keep James sedated for optimum healing. Please continue to pray and trust our mighty God.

February 2nd - There is not much new information. James had fever last night but it has been normal today. His blood pressure has been on the low side and he had another day without dialysis. Please keep praying for the tissue to heal and for the infections to cease but we will continue to trust His timing and His will.

February 1st - James was able to go these last two days without dialysis. His kidneys are improving but only to a small degree. There was no fever but his blood pressure was low and he seemed to be uncomfortable. His Morphine level has been increased dramatically in the last week and with low blood pressure they have to be very careful before increasing the morphine to a higher level. The wound nurse changed his dressing today and commented that she had hoped to see more healing. We continue to pray and wait --- but wait with the purpose of glorifying God.
